Hello!
I’m excited to invite you to a special exhibition this July at The Gallery ABQ: Northeast Meets Southwest, featuring the powerful, expressive paintings of my father, John Stermer, alongside ceramic works by the talented Laura McIndoo of Redbud Pottery.
About John Stermer.
John Stermer’s career spanned continents, but his artistic voice found its home in New Mexico. Originally from Elmira, New York, he studied and worked at The Art Students League of New York and later immersed himself in Europe’s art scene, training at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. After nine years abroad, he settled in Silver City, where his distinctive style evolved and his deep connection to the Southwest took shape.
His work reflects a lifetime of passion for the land, culture, and people of both the Northeast and the Southwest. He painted in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and print, and his leadership shaped the art community in Silver City and beyond. Today, his work is part of the permanent collections at the Albuquerque Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the New Mexico State Capitol, and Western New Mexico University.
