Hi! Today I would like to share with you a “detail” or partial photo of the John Stermer oil painting “The Swim Team”. Need I say that this one is another family favorite?
You may think it a bit odd that I start out the fall season by sharing a summer-themed painting. After all, swimming is a favorite summer activity. However, in New Mexico, John Stermer’s home the last 30 plus years of his life, September and even October can be good swimming weather.
More to the point, I like “The Swim Team” any time of the year. It reminds me of the exuberance of youth. Also, the painting reminds me of the Pablo Picasso painting “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”, Paris 1907. While Dad did not copy the Picasso painting, I can see the inspiration in how the female figures are composed. It strikes me that the Cubist-inspired approach is most appropriate for expressing the exuberance of youth.
Another thing you might notice is the grid-like structure used in the background in the painting. This is one of the composition strategies that John Stermer liked to use from time to time. For example, his painting “Rose Theme II” is another piece with a grid organizing structure.
In any case, I hope that you enjoy the painting in your own, unique personal way. And, I hope that it brings you a feeling of joy.
Warmest regards.
