National Vietnam Veterans Day 2025

National Vietnam Veterans Day 2025

Today (March 29th) is our National Vietnam Veterans Day.  And, to all the Vietnam Veterans and their families, thank you for your service.

Vietnam Veterans Day 2025

Growing up in Bayard and Silver City NM, I remember seeing soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in uniform when they were home on leave.  Many of these young people were older brothers, cousins or uncles of my friends and classmates.  It made an impression on me.

Later, I would learn that I, too, have family members who served: an uncle and two cousins.  Eventually, I would marry a Vietnam veteran.  (So, John Stermer had a brother-in-law, two nephews, and a son-in-law who served).

Thinking about it so many years later, I do not recall seeing women veterans at the time. But, I’ll never forget reading an account written by a woman Vietnam Veteran. To explain, when she landed in Vietnam and walked off the plane, she realized the only weapon she had was her purse – she called it her “battle purse”. The point was that most military women were not issued weapons in that era. I find that astonishing.

Just thinking, the Vietnam War ended over 50 years ago.  It was a big part of my childhood.  For several years, it dominated our country.

On behalf of John Stermer Fine Art and my family, I salute all the people who bravely served.

Again, thank you today, Vietnam Veterans Day, and everyday.
